Firefox Bookmark Export and Restore Need Different Plans for Existing Bookmarks

Moving a bookmark collection seems like a small browser task until the receiving computer already contains links that somebody needs to keep. Before selecting an import or restore command, write down the intended end state. Are you adding another collection, replacing the current collection with an earlier one, or transferring bookmarks to a different browser? Those are different jobs.

Start with the receiving collection

The most useful first question is what must survive on the destination. A source file can be perfectly valid and still be the wrong input for the intended operation. A filename such as “bookmarks final” tells you little about its format, age or the browser profile from which it was created. Keep those details with the file before making a change.

Mozilla distinguishes an HTML bookmark export, intended for transfer to other browsers or computers, from Firefox bookmark backups in JSON or JSONLZ4. Its restoration guidance warns that restoring a backup overwrites the current bookmarks. It points to importing HTML instead when the aim is to merge old and new bookmarks. The distinction belongs to the operation, not just the word “backup” in somebody’s informal notes.

Describe the result in a sentence

A request such as “bring my old links back” is ambiguous. Ask whether the receiving browser should contain only the old collection or both the old collection and newer links. Write the answer as an acceptance statement. For example: “Keep today’s project bookmarks and add the reference collection from the older computer.” That statement gives the person doing the work something concrete to check before accepting any replacement warning.

Here is a fictional planning example. Dana has a new computer with a week of project links. An older computer holds years of reference bookmarks. Dana wants access to both collections. Restoring an old backup without considering the new links would conflict with that stated goal. A plan should preserve the destination’s current state, choose an appropriate transfer method and include a review of both collections afterward. This example illustrates a decision; it is not a report of a transfer we performed.

Make a small transfer record

Do not rename a file extension in the hope of converting one format into another. A clear record is also helpful when someone else takes over: they can review the intended result instead of guessing which file named “latest” is authoritative. Keep the original source file separate from any working copy used during preparation.

Check more than the first visible toolbar

After an authorized transfer, review representative folders from both the source and destination. Choose one recently created destination bookmark and one older source bookmark as checkpoints. Confirm that the intended links and folder organization can be found. A toolbar that looks sparse is a reason to inspect the bookmark library and display choices before assuming the transfer lost every other folder.

Keep the checks modest and deliberate. A successful import message establishes that an operation completed; it does not prove that every collection was the correct age or that the person requested replacement. If the resulting collection differs from the acceptance statement, stop before repeating the operation and creating a second layer of uncertainty.

Protect the collection during a support handoff

Bookmark files can contain private work links, account-specific addresses or internal resource names. Do not attach the whole collection to an initial public support question. Describe the file type, browser version, chosen operation and observed result first. Use only permitted sample links when illustrating the problem, and keep the actual collection with its owner.
